This photo was taken from the beach at Tjørnuvík on the Faroe Islands. It is a village located very north on the island on Streymoy. Off the coast are the rocks 'Risin og Kellingin' or in Dutch 'the giant and the witch'. They stand in the sea next to Eiðiskollur, a 343-metre-high sea cliff on the north coast of the island of Eysturoy. Risin (the giant) has a height of 71 metres and Kellingin (the witch) rises 69 metres above the sea surface.
The story tells of Icelandic giants who were jealous of the beautiful Faroe Islands. A giant and a witch were sent there to go and get the islands. Arriving at the high sea cliff Eiðiskollur, the giant remained in the sea. The witch climbed up the cliffs on ropes. Once at the top, she tied the islands together and then strapped them onto the giant's back. After pulling the ropes, however, the mountain split in two. The witch could no longer manage to tie the islands together. All night she went on, but failed to move the mountain.
The picture was taken just as the sun was being displaced by coming clouds. The light just barely breaks through and illuminates the cliffs. It gives a nice picture of what the atmosphere on the Faroe Islands is often like. A play between clouds, rain and the sun.
