For my work, I regularly visit America. Similarly, this time I flew to Salt Lake City. Upon arrival, I always rent a car and try to leave the city behind as soon as possible. With my camera gear in the back of the car, I then set off in search of the unknown.
This time I drove towards central Utah, to Hanksville, an old mining town where time almost seems to stand still. They reportedly did not get access to electricity there until the 1960s.
During such drives, I always have music on: sometimes local radio, sometimes my own playlist. As I drive through the vast plains of this impressive state, with the right music playing in the background, a broad smile invariably appears on my face. And sometimes, when the moment really kicks in, a ray of happiness even rolls down my cheek.
Every now and then, something along the way catches my attention. Whenever possible, I pull over. That happened this time too: to my right, I saw a striking cloud formation that looked suspiciously like a UFO. I had to capture that one. The empty, vast landscape, with a windmill and an old water tank in the background, and above it that peculiar cloud, it just made sense.
At home, I started working on the editing. I really take my time with that. For this photo, I deliberately chose a monochrome edit, to emphasize the simplicity and character of the landscape.
