The desolate landscape is traversed by a slowly winding road. A car drives in the middle, heading for destination unknown. On either side of the road, gently sloping rocks rise up, overgrown with green grasses and mosses. A bit unreal, in such a landscape you wouldn't expect greenery anyway. But this valley proves that life crawls where it cannot seem to go.
I created this work on the summit of Dalsnibba in Norway, at 1500m one of Europe's highest viewpoints accessible by car. The road leads through the valley towards the Geirangerfjord. The viewpoint offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
With this work, I try to capture the huge landscape and show how small and insignificant we - humans - really are. At the same time, the work shows that life can creep everywhere, even high up in the mountains. And finally, it also shows the great ingenuity of man, who knows how to build a road through such a challenging landscape.
