The lively fashionable resort of Riva del Garda is surrounded by mighty mountains on the narrow northern tip of Lake Garda.
With a population of around 13,000, it is the second largest town on the lake after Desenzano. It has only belonged to Italy since 1919 and before that was under Austrian rule for a long time. This can still be felt and leads to a pleasant mixture of Italian ease and Tyrolean down-to-earthness.
The church "Chiesa di S. Maria Inviolata" was built in the 17th century outside the city walls at a crossroads, known as a spiazzo. On the site there had previously been an aedicule with an image of the Virgin Mary, created around 1600 by the painter Bartolomeo Mangiavino, a native of Salò. The image was soon attributed miraculous powers, so that it became the destination of pilgrimages. In order to keep the image in a dignified place and to cope with the rush of pilgrims, a small wooden chapel was first built. At the same time, donations were collected from the population for the construction of a church.
