On September 21, 1961, the Renault 4 celebrated its world premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt as the successor to the Renault 4 CV Cremeschnittchen. In Germany initially reviled by customers, revolver gear shift, camping chairs as seating in the front and rear, 23 hp provided only 85 km/h top speed and side windows to be opened by hand sliding.
But a huge tailgate, an unbeatable price of only 3,850 DM, consumption around 6.5 L gasoline/100 km (Renault 3 with 5.0 L gasoline/100 km), 3-speed transmission and long suspension struts and a variable interior with seats to remove (passenger seat and back seat)! And of course the front-wheel drive not to forget, it was the first French automobile that went so into series production.
