Alfred Stevens was a Belgian painter, best known for his paintings of elegant women. He was very influenced by 17th century Dutch genre painting. He came from an artistic family, and an extended family who ran a cafe where artists, writers and other famous people gathered. After at first being recognised for his painting about the plight of the poor, he went on to become successful for his paintings of the upper middle class in Paris.
