About ‘Red Reflection’ by Dirk Lahuis

Just moments after the initial emotional surge, this work shows the silence that follows desire. The woman has turned her head slightly. No longer looking directly and longingly outwards, she seems to be turning inwards. Here we see the transition from pure emotion to deep contemplation.

The theme "Red" remains undiminished, but changes its meaning here. Where it first stood for ardent desire, the colour now embraces her thoughts during this moment of introspection. She ponders her situation, weighs and weighs. The uncertainty has not disappeared, but has given way to a moment of reflection. The composition is intimate and draws the viewer close, as if we are witnessing a secret private moment.

This work exudes a melancholic calm. It is a beautiful counterpart to the first image, but also stands powerfully on its own. Hang this work in a place where peace and depth are desired. It reminds us that in the silence of our thoughts the most important stories are often written.

My passion for photography started early, around 1970. In the era of analogue photography, I bought a second-hand Agfa Iso Rapid Ic from my savings. Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach.
