This striking photograph shows a railway line running through a working-class district of Malang, on the island of Java, Indonesia. The tracks stretch as far as the eye can see, winding their way between houses with worn walls and makeshift facades that bear witness to daily life in this part of the city. On one side, lush vegetation climbs up the slope, adding a touch of greenery to this urban landscape; on the other, makeshift houses cling to the edge of the tracks, sometimes just a few metres from the passing trains.
The image illustrates both the cohabitation of modern infrastructure and precariousness, and the resilience of the inhabitants who live at the rhythm of the convoys. Under a contrasting sky, the light reveals the textures of the stone, metal and wood, accentuating the raw, authentic look of the scene. The railway becomes a symbol of movement and survival, a metaphor for everyday life in Indonesia's big cities, where tradition, urbanisation and humanity intermingle.
A suspended moment where the silence of the tracks tells us more than words can about the quiet strength of local life.
