About the artwork

Tulip (Tulipa) is a genus of monocotyledonous plants of the lily family (Liliaceae). Tulips were introduced to the western world by the Viennese ambassador to Turkey, Ogier Gisleen van Busbeke, who wrote about the flowers he had seen in Edirne, Turkey, in 1551. He later sent some of its seeds to Austria.[1]

The arrival of a cargo of tulip bulbs from Turkey in Antwerp in 1562 marked the beginning of European tulip cultivation.

The Netherlands is famous for its cultivated tulips and is one of the main exporting countries of tulips and tulip bulbs. Traditionally, an exhibition of millions of tulips is made in the Keukenhof in Lisse in the spring, which is mainly visited by tourists. In addition, many tourists come to look at the tulip fields. Best known are the more traditional fields along the dunes of South Holland and the West Frisian polders. However, the majority of tulips can be found in Flevoland, especially in the Noordoostpolder (more than 2000 hectares)
