The Baggage Carriers' House is a former guildhall of the baggage carriers' guild in Schiedam. It was built in 1725. The building has a tower with an associated clock. This bell was rung when a ship sailed in. The bagbearers then went to the guildhall. Once the men were inside, their names were written on the so-called 'smack boards'. Whoever rolled the highest dice was entitled to work. The work consisted of unloading the grain ships. As early as around 1250 there must have been porters in Schiedam. They carried goods from one ship to another. Over the recently built dam in the Schie. A century later these carriers organised themselves in a guild. The exact date is not known. It will be similar to other port cities and in any case before 1465. That is when the Anthonius guild was first mentioned in the Keurboek van Schiedam.
