Small balconies on the east side offered spontaneous meetings and views of each other's studios - the daily transparency realised social connectedness ().
Each floor was given its own colour - blue, red, yellow or white - devised by Hinnerk Scheper, creating a visual sense of identity . After a complete restoration between 1996 and 2006, the building is again open to visitors and suitable for overnight stays .
