Preaching of John the Baptist, Abraham Bloemaert, 1590 - 1610
The protagonist in this scene, John the Baptist, the pioneer of Jesus, stands half hidden in the shadow of an erratic group of trees. It is as if Bloemaert wants to show that he can paint everything: a mountainous landscape, leafy trees, people, naked and dressed in exotic, colourful robes. With this and the complicated postures he shows himself to be a master of Mannerism.
