The Ice Duck is common along the Norwegian coast, especially in the northern fjords where this photo was also taken. In winter, these ducks gather in large numbers in the icy Norwegian waters, where they dive for food such as molluscs and crustaceans. The male is notable for his black and white plumage and long tail feather, which gives him a graceful appearance and makes him extra conspicuous in winter. The female Ice Duck, pictured here, is less conspicuously coloured than the male and has a brown, striped plumage that helps her stay well camouflaged in her surroundings.
