Portrait of a Woman on a Velvet Sofa – Expressive Oil Painting in Deep Red Tones by Roger VDB

This powerful frontal portrait depicts a woman lying dramatically stretched out on a velvet sofa in a dark, cinematic lounge. Her gaze is direct and intense, fixed on the viewer, whilst her posture balances elegance, weariness and self-assurance. A loose heel hangs casually from her foot, her dark red silk suit is half-open and her tousled dark hair reinforces the sense of an unpolished, genuine moment.

The space is bathed in deep burgundy and wine-red tones, lending the painting a warm yet mysterious atmosphere. An amber-coloured lamp casts soft light through the shadows, creating strong contrasts between skin, fabric and background. The light emphasises the rich texture of the velvet and the visible brush and palette knife strokes in the paint. The background remains expressive and slightly abstract, drawing all attention to the model’s emotional presence.

The painting style is loose, powerful and clearly influenced by contemporary figurative art. The work is reminiscent of the expressive portraits of Jenny Saville, the cinematic atmosphere of Edward Hopper and the modern luxury aesthetic of fashion editorials and boutique hotels. Influences are also visible from contemporary gallery art in which imperfect realism and emotional tension take centre stage.

The result is an intense and cinematic painting in which sensuality, weariness, luxury and human vulnerability converge in a powerful composition rich in colour, shadow and texture.
