More object data After the death of William of Orange in 1584, his son Maurice was appointed stadholder, the most important administrative position in the Republic. In 1590, he was also given command of the army and fleet. Maurice (1567-1625) is depicted in the prong coat decorated with engravings and gilt that the States General gave him after his victory at the Battle of Nieuwpoort (1600).
