The young, still living at home Veth painted here meticulously and conscientiously his three sisters. His father judged the portrait of his daughters with equal care: 'My judgement about the portraits is and remains that they are very similar, that they are anything but flattered and that there are some sharp outlines, which I would have preferred to have softened a little.'
