Ponta de São Lourenço in the breath of the Atlantic

by Walter G. Allgöwer

On the north coast of Madeira, where the volcanic Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula defies the Atlantic, time loses its sharpness. The long exposure makes visible what would otherwise remain hidden: the patient breathing of the sea, the gentle negotiation between water and stone. The rocky coast rises up like an open book of lava and ash, each layer a chapter of fire, cooling and tireless erosion.
The cliffs drop abruptly into the distance, as if Europe had taken a final, determined step into infinity. The Atlantic no longer washes around the rocks in waves, but in veils. A white haze settles around the dark shapes, transforming power into stillness. The rocky arch off the coast acts like a gateway - a transition between the visible and the perceived, between past and present.
Above everything lies a subdued light, restrained like a breath before the word. The colours of the volcanic peninsula, rust red, grey and moss green, tell of heat and cooling, of destruction and new beginnings. In this landscape, at the Ponta de Sao Lourenco, the world seems to slow down. Those who linger here understand: Permanence is not a standstill, but a quiet, endless continuation.
