The red sunflower, Echinacea purpurea, is a very popular garden plant. The large flowers are beautiful and attract many butterflies, bees and bumblebees.
The characteristic, daisy-like flowers of the purple coneflower (Echinacea) are indispensable in the late summer border. They have a thick, bulbous heart and petals that are almost horizontal in shape: just like the shape of a classic sunflower. The large flowers of Echinacea give any border a summery look. The thick heart is full of nectar, very tempting to butterflies and bumblebees. The best time to plant Echinacea in your garden is in spring. Leave the Echinacea where it is after flowering; they have an attractive silhouette even when they have finished flowering.
