Rarity
A common resident butterfly that has greatly expanded in recent decades. The speckled sandpiper is now found scattered all over the country as long as there are a few trees and shrubs.
Flight time and behaviour
Late March-end October (November) in three overlapping generations. Males behave remarkably territorially. The butterflies feed on honeydew, sap from fruits and bleeding trees and nectar from blackberry, among others.
The latest dates when the pied sandpiper has been seen are 3 March and 8 November.
