The idea for this picture arose from the desire to show the classic beauty of the peony in its natural complexity rather than idealised. I was particularly interested in the tension between the apparent delicacy of the flower and its actual presence in the room.
The atmosphere I want to create with this work is calm, but not passive - a moment of concentration on the essentials. The message is in the detail: Perception begins where we are willing to take a closer look.
