Dalmatian Pelicans are among the largest bird species on the planet. Their habitat extends from south-eastern Europe through Eurasia to the coast of China. Despite their huge habitat, there is a high risk that the slightest disease could decimate their numbers. Personally, I have been following them for several years and try to travel to Kerkini Lake in central Macedonia at least once a year to photograph them. Given the good fish stock and the fact that they are fed there, they should find ideal conditions to survive there, but bird flu has wreaked havoc on the population there too. Their wingspan of up to 350cm is huge, but what for me is their most distinctive feature is their penetrating gaze. The pride and self-confidence it exudes never leaves me unmoved.
