Penelope, the daughter of Icarius, a brother of the Spartan king Tyndareos, and Periboia, was a desirable suitor for several princes of Greece because of her beauty. Her father, to prevent those who danced for her hand from clashing, had his prospective sons-in-law participate in games, where the stakes were Penelope's hand. Since Odysseus was the victor of these games, he was henceforth allowed to call himself her husband. Eduard Julius Friedrich Bendemann (Berlin, 3 December 1811, Berlin - 27 December 1889, Düsseldorf) was a German-Jewish painter.
