About the artwork
In 2023, I visited the Brazilian Pantanal, the largest wetland landscape in the world. This area of South America is home to the largest population of jaguars in the world, which often hunt (or mate) along the banks of rivers in the dry months. The jaguar is the largest feline living in the wild, roaming a wetland and forested area. Their enormous strength and strong jaws allow them to feed on caimans, rodents, snakes and turtles.
During one of the boat trips we took through this swamp landscape, we met this male named Tomas. He was lying quietly behind a tree, with the female Jaju, also present, keeping a close eye on him to mate with.
As photographers, we always like to get the jaguar in full view for a photo, but there was clearly no chance of that here. This forced me to look at the situation differently, which ultimately resulted in this powerful photo. A photo full of tension that also leaves a lot to the imagination.... What is he looking at?
For me, the photo was a wonderful addition to my collection of photos's of these amazing animals, which are threatened by poaching and deforestation.
With its neutral colour scheme, the image fits almost any interior and certainly fits very well in an interior or space where a lot of work is done with natural elements.
