Nestling at the confluence of the Roshi and Punyamati rivers, Panauti is one of Nepal's oldest jewels of Newar heritage. This peaceful town, sheltered from mass tourism, has a captivating traditional architecture and a timeless atmosphere. Strolling through its cobbled streets is like stepping back in time to see superb temples carved from wood, century-old houses with ornate facades and places bustling with local life.
The 13th-century Indreshwar Mahadev temple is one of the oldest Hindu shrines in the country and a focal point of spiritual pilgrimage. Panauti is also famous for its Makar Mela festival, which takes place only once every twelve years and attracts thousands of devotees.
Surrounded by rice paddies and green hills, the town also offers a great escape from the capital, Kathmandu. A veritable open-air museum, it embodies the soul of the new culture and is well worth a visit for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the history and spirituality of Nepal.
