What do you think of when you think of a sunny, summer place?
The sea? Probably
And, of course, the sun.
A blue sky.
Cosy terraces perhaps or beautiful views.
And I immediately picture a palm tree.
Maybe this palm tree. A palm with a long, sturdy trunk, as evidence of all the years it's been here. Full of scars from previous palm branches as it grew on to its current height. It has palm leaves four up, they stand out beautifully against the blue sky. And in the shade of the leaves hang ripening dates. Which are slowly turning to a warm orange-brown. The sun shines warmly and brightly on the tree and dates. It is somewhere on the left, out of view. The brightening glow on the leaves and dates betrays that his direction.
The tree is on the island of Syros in Greece. Where I saw it on a warm day in October. The dates are almost ripe and when I dream for a moment I see someone climbing up to harvest them. After which the cycle begins again with a new round of swaying leaves at the top, a new hooded edge at the bottom and new bunches of dates emerging between the ridges of the bark.
