Petten is a village and former municipality, but now part of the municipality of Schagen, in the province of North Holland. The village lies on the North Sea. The number of inhabitants is approximately 1,655. The village Petten exists since 1300. The village had at that time another name namely Petten bi der Sipe. The village disappeared completely into the sea in 1792. During a storm in 1625 no less than a hundred houses went down. From the 18th century onwards, the village was gradually moved. On the current beach of Petten is now a monument (Palendorp) that symbolizes the old village.
