Anyone who has ever been in Venice along the Grand Canal by boat was certainly just as excited as I am, by the incredible beauty and extraordinary architecture of the many palaces. A very special shines and glitters with its white mamor facade in the sun. It is called the Golden House, the Ca d'Oro. Venice was the richest and one of the largest cities in Europe in the early Middle Ages (population in 1300: London-100,000, Venice-110,000). Venetian merchants had the monopoly of trade in rare spices, incense, precious stones and magnificent fabrics from the Orient and Asia. The city attracted skilled craftsmen, architects, painters and sculptors who could realize their skills and talent in the many churches and palaces. Still famous painters like Titian, Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Guardi and sculptors like Corradini ,Bellini or Canova worked in Venice.
The Ca d'Oro Palace was built between 1428 and 1430 for the Contarini family, who provided Venice with eight Doges between 1043 and 1676 . The architects of the Ca d'Oro were Giovanni Bon and his son Bartolomeo Bon.Franchetti bequeathed the Ca' d'Oro to the Italian state in 1916. It is now open to the public as a gallery: Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca' d'Oro .
According to tradition, when the palace was completed, large parts of the facade of the palace were gilded or painted with the color ultramarine (which was more expensive than gold at that time). In my picture I tried to show the original beauty of the palace and hope you like it.
