Inspired by the great American marine painter John Stobart, I always wanted to do a painting from the past where the star is a clipper ship. The ship is the American clipper "Young America" from 1853. This ship was not a record, but still one of the fastest ships of its time. Anyone who has sailed knows how incredibly fast 18-22 knots is. Unfortunately, there is only one original clipper ship left in the world, the "Cutty Sark", which can be seen as a museum ship in London.
I have the "Young America" moored in a fictitious harbour, where she is waiting for her cargo the next day. The crew are enjoying themselves in the harbour pubs while the ship and her captain wait impatiently for the next crossing to set a record. Dear John Stobart, Thank you so much for this inspiration and for your countless great images that touch me deeply and transport me to another time.
This is the 2nd version of the fantastic sailing ship Young America, which I let become night in the harbor and hope you like the scene.
Since my childhood I paint and draw. Early on I was also interested in technology and history. Like many artists, I am very rarely satisfied with my works. One strives for perfection, tries to at least come close to it.
