The Pak Ou Caves, also known as Tham Ting and Tham Theung, are important Buddhist sites in Laos, located at the mouth of the Nam Ou River into the Mekong, opposite the village of Pak-Ou. The Pak Ou Caves have a history dating back thousands of years. It is believed that the caves have been visited by pilgrims and now tourists since the 16th century. Legend has it that the cave temple was built on the opposite side of the river in 1547 by King Setthathirat on the occasion of the founding of the village of Vak Pal Ou.
