About "Painting The Slavish Woman"

by Yvon Jonckbloedt

About the artwork

This painting The Slavish woman is more surreal than figurative. It was created from several images of Slavic women with flowers on their heads, but also inspired by the paintings of Mucha , who painted many Slavic women with the curves behind the head. This surrealist woman has no flowers on her head but thistles, and no flowers in her hand but ivy slowly creeping up. She is not very pretty nor does she look very friendly. This makes her a contrast to all those beautiful images. It is a mixedmedia work made on 60 x 80 canvas. Mixed media art is often used to express deeper emotional or political messages and is popular in modern art.

The mixedmedia treatment can be seen if you look closely at the ivy which is partly made up of painting and clippings of ivy. Surrealist art shows art that is bizarre, unreal, curious and depict images that are symbolic , deformed. Surrealist artworks often contain alienating elements and visual contradictions.
