Overglow is a digital artwork created by a fusion between a drawing and a painting. The drawing is made with drawing techniques of pen and charcoal and the painting consists of multiple layers of various painting techniques.
The work was inspired by a photograph I took during a sunset on Punakaiki beach in the South Island during my trip to New Zealand in 2007.
Near the famous Pancake Rocks, there was a beautiful stretch of sandy beach. The strong winds during the day had subsided and a beautiful sunset could be seen on the horizon. The sand of the beach was pristine, only it had strange smudges in it. Perhaps a legacy of the wind?
Overglow is a work of art with a sunset, but different. In reality, there was a warm glow in the sky, but not as extreme as shown in the artwork. Overglow is therefore a surrealist figurative artwork where the warm glow of the sun has been greatly exaggerated.
For those who may be thinking: "I've never heard of the word Overglow...". That may very well be true. In fact, the word does not exist. It is a play on words with overflow and glow.
