About the artwork

This is a digital artwork of a fusion between a drawing and a painting. The drawing is made with drawing techniques of pencil and charcoal and the painting consists of several layers of various painting techniques.

The work is inspired by a film recording I made in my studio of a pink Sarah Bernhardt peony. The movie recording was created from a series of photos taken at five minute intervals over a period of three weeks. This is how the life of this peony that started as a flower bud and died as a dried flower was recorded.

Ten years later, this film recording is still very popular as stock video all over the world. To think I would have almost thrown the video in the trash because I didn't think the technical execution had gone quite as planned. This was even confirmed by the rejection of the recording by a stock media company where I first offered the video. Ultimately, other stock companies saw potential in the take-up. And looking back, this video has turned out to be by far my most successful stock media to date.

I can't say whether it will be such a success on the wall. I thought I should do something with this recording. I owe so much to that one shot that making it into a work of art seemed like a nice tribute to me. The artwork has a nice spot at the entrance to my workspace that reminds me that great success can come out of nowhere.

I am also proud of the result of this artwork. The peony looks stylish and tender. I have chosen a moment where the peony is towards the end of its flowering. She is still beautiful and she gives me the idea that she has acquired a certain maturity and wisdom during her short life.

I like the feminine elegance the most about this work. Personally, I admire strong intelligent women who are also proud of their femininity, beauty and attractiveness. In the wavy petals see also tenderness. It is therefore not surprising that this work reminds me of a beautiful, strong, smart woman. The peony. She is beautiful. She is tender. She is wise.
