Operation of the lignite mine at Jackerath in Germany still in full swing.
Germany is the world's largest producer of lignite.
Lignite originated in a Mediterranean climate. At first peat-like material was formed in swamp forests with coniferous trees. Repeated floods deposited sediment on it. Under high pressure and temperature the material changed into lignite. If the pressure and temperature had been even higher, coal would have been produced.
I took this photo in August 2020 from the viewpoint over the lignite mine at Jackerath. In post processing I deliberately took out some of the colours. Mining brown coal is, in my humble opinion, no longer of this time and unfortunately still causes a lot of environmental damage.
