Open artichoke with a purple centre and soft shadows

by Valleifoto | Rick van de Kraats

The composition centres on the almost floral structure of an open artichoke. Broad, outward-curving leaves form a rhythmic pattern around a compact, purplish core. The fine veins, frayed leaf edges and colour gradients are clearly visible and lend the central object a distinctly sculptural character. The main subject is positioned to the left of centre, creating space on the right for a second, closed artichoke in a round ceramic bowl.

The composition consists of an interplay of rounded volumes, diagonal leaf lines and undulating folds in the fabric. The linen connects the foreground with the middle ground, whilst the rough stone edge at the bottom provides a horizontal base. At the back, a modest arrangement of branches provides vertical lines. The soft, irregularly coloured wall allows the forms to stand out without creating a sharp division between the objects and the background.

Beige is the dominant colour. Muted olive green, a hint of aubergine purple and dark shadows add nuance to the warm tones. The light falls at an angle from the left, emphasising the differences between the matt linen, the porous stone, the speckled pottery and the smoother-looking leaf surfaces.

Thanks to this layering, the still life suits both a calm, modern interior and a more classical setting. The careful balance between detail and open space is particularly effective on a large, uncluttered wall.
