Neeltje Jans is part of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier as a work island. Neeltje Jans is approximately 285 hectares in size and is located halfway between Schouwen and Noord-Beveland, but nevertheless belongs to the municipality of Veere on Walcheren. The name Neeltje Jans was obtained by a boat that got stuck on the sandbank and which also bore that name, it is an old folk name for the patron goddess Nehalennia.
