Between Hoogezand and Zuidlaren lies the beautiful Tusschenwater nature reserve. A water catchment area, it is a relatively new area and was officially opened in 2019. The nature reserve is a marsh area and was specially designed to combine nature, water storage and drinking water supply. It is a flow-through marsh which means there is water all year round. It has become an important habitat for many bird species, including stilts and spoonbills, but also consists of puddles, mudflats, sandflats, marshes and wet meadows. The area lies east of Zuidlaren and south of the Zuidlaardermeer lies the Hunzedal. The little river Hunze meanders beautifully through this nature reserve.
