The kingfisher feeds mainly on small fish. Here it sits quietly on a branch above the water, searching for a tasty morsel. The kingfisher takes its time. When it sees one, it dives into the water as fast as it can and grabs the fish. It sits back on the branch and beats the fish several times until it is dead or unconscious. Only then does the kingfisher throw it up and catch it in its beak, only to swallow it in one bite.
