About the artwork
Prunus hixae-Lauretalia novocanariensis is an order of plant communities characterised by trees mostly belonging to the laurel family. They are found on several islands in the Canary Archipelago, Madeira and the Azores. In the dense humid forests, the evergreen foliage provides plenty of diffuse light and high humidity, creating a truly fairy-like world under the tree crowns with many mosses and eventually ferns on the trunks and branches of the trees.
Walking through the narrow paths in this world is a delight for the eye and ear. Birds of many species all tell their own story, claim territory through their singing and provide offspring. On the forest floor grow many species of endemic plants that often rely on this particular world for their survival. So if you ever come to the Azores to enjoy these beautiful islands, look up and take a walk through these beautiful and enchanting surroundings of the laurel forests, an experience and atmosphere to remember.
