About the artwork

Michael Ladenthin is a German artist born in 1963 who grew up and lives and works in the Ruhr area. His works are characterised by an expressionist and partly realistic approach based on abstract processes. He experiments mainly with the primary colours yellow, cyan and magenta, supplemented by white and black. The interplay of these colours creates random structures that form stories and scenes that can depict dreams or psychotic states. A striking feature of his art is the conscious decision to leave parts of the pictures unprocessed. These free areas offer the viewer space for their own interpretations and allow them to discover individual pictorial elements in the abstract structures and add personal scenes.

An outstanding example of his work is the painting "Octopussy". This work measures 60 x 60 cm and is created in mixed media (oil on acrylic). In an expressive painting style, it depicts a dominant octopus that seems to illustratively dominate a situation. The painting combines watercolour features with abstract elements and generous areas of colour. The mixture of precise details and open areas invites the viewer to find their own interpretations and meanings. The contrasting colours and dynamic composition lend the work a lively yet mysterious atmosphere.
