Now that I see you - Collage from my Art Journal This art journal page was created in the theme of seeing and being seen. To see and to be seen you need light, but you must not be blinded by the brightness of the light. You also need peace and quiet, otherwise you 'can't see the forest for the trees'. The woman in this collage is hidden behind strips of paper and washi tape. She is overshadowed by detail so you can no longer see her clearly. Yet amidst the chaos, a place has been found through which you can see her, just a small piece. And because it is only such a small part of the whole, we are actually triggered by curiosity as to what she actually looks like. Fascinating, I think. We already know the principle from the French surrealist René Magritte and it takes on a new meaning here in a completely unique way in this crowded, playful collage.
In the background, I painted with acrylic paint in brown, green, blue and ochre on a black background. Over this, I stuck on various images from magazines such as the woman, the lamp and the sunglasses red using transparent gel. Over that washi tape was applied in blue and pink. Over that collage, I started drawing with white, gold and black markers and stamped with organic patterns using white modelling paste mixed with blue acrylic paint. Here and there, I painted sections of blue and white to add calmness. All this was then photographed and given a digital filter. This filter ensures that up close (if at large size) the image has nice abstract planes and from afar you can see the image in totality.
