The T-38 was designed in the mid-1950s as a training variant of the N-156, a lightweight fighter. The aircraft was developed by the Northrop Corporation and although the USAF had no need for a lightweight fighter, there was interest in using the aircraft as a trainer to replace the obsolete Lockheed T-33.
Three prototypes were built, the first of which flew on march 10, 1959. The aircraft was quickly put into service and production started in 1961. In about 11 years, about 1,200 aircraft were built. Many thousands of military pilots have flown this training aircraft.
