Is it air or water? Is it night or is there something of daylight shimmering there after all? Are the insects swimming or floating? Do the clouds float or sail? And what is up and down? This image lets your imagination work. It's not a ready-made chunk of art, not an image you've seen at a glance. It is full of bubbles and lines, angles and curves, bright images and vague outlines.
Over the course of several months, I built up this image layer after layer after layer. It is a combination of all kinds of photos from my archive and a layered digital editing of those photos.
I love the dark atmosphere of this image. The different shades of blue to dark blue remind me of the works of old masters. Blue pigment was so incredibly expensive in the Middle Ages, more expensive than gold, that it was worked with very carefully. The careful handling of materials appeals to me.
