This picture was taken in Amsterdam.
In July 2006 the city of Amsterdam announced its intention to have the ring of canals nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The ring of canals is a system of streets, quays, bridges and houses on fairly identical parcels of equal length and width with closed courtyards, the so-called keurblokken.
Because the houses have been rebuilt several times over the centuries, many different architectural styles and facades can be found next to each other.
Despite breakthroughs in the 20th century and in some cases ugly or overly colossal new buildings, the picturesque ring of canals is one of the main tourist attractions.
