The Neue Wache (the New Guard) is a structure in the German capital Berlin on Unter den Linden. Throughout its 200-year history, the building was given special significance by different political regimes.
After German unification in 1991, the Neue Wache was rededicated in 1993. This time, the building was dedicated as the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany to the victims of war and tyranny. In the process, the wall sculpture from the GDR era was removed. On the initiative of Chancellor Helmut Kohl, an enlarged copy of a sculpture by German artist Käthe Kollwitz, Mother with her Dead Son, also known as Pieta, which Kollwitz made in response to the death of her son Peter during World War I, was placed there.
