Nagelfluh above the Iller Valley

by Walter G. Allgöwer

High up on the Steineberg, the Nagelfluh rock lies like a stony memory of time. In its rugged forms, it bears the traces of ancient forces that shaped this landscape long before people found their way through the Iller Valley. From here, at an altitude of 1,683 metres, the view stretches far across the green heart of the Allgäu, as if the earth itself were telling its most beautiful stories.
Beneath the deep blue sky, gentle ridges of meadows slope down into the valley, criss-crossed by paths that look like delicate lines in a living painting. In between lie forests like dark islands of tranquillity, where wind and light whisper to one another. Far below, Sonthofen spreads out, nestled between hills and mountains, a quiet companion against this majestic backdrop.
On the horizon rises the Grünten, the guardian of the Allgäu. Its striking silhouette stands powerfully over the land, connecting heaven and earth in an unmistakable way. Behind it, the peaks of the Allgäu Alps stand out in delicate shades of blue, layer upon layer, until they merge with the horizon.
Those who linger here sense the vastness not just with their eyes. It draws into one’s thoughts, makes everyday life seem small and reminds us just how vast, still and timeless the world can be. Between rock, sky and valley, every moment becomes a quiet dialogue with the beauty of the Alps.
