Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the most important composers of the Viennese classical period and a child prodigy. He had already composed three operas by the age of 12. Mozart was born in Salzburg on 27 January 1756.
The Mozart monument by Ludwig Schwanthaler is located in the centre of Mozartplatz in Salzburg. The statue was to be erected in 1841 on the 50th anniversary of Mozart's death. However, the unveiling of the monument was delayed by a year because a Roman mosaic was found in the ground, which took a long time to recover. On 4 September 1842, the statue was ceremoniously unveiled in the presence of Mozart's sons.
