About the artwork

Mount Fuji (富士山, Fujisan, Japanese: [ɸɯꜜ(d)ʑisaɴ]) is an active stratovolcano located on the Japanese island of Honshū, The strikingly symmetrical cone of Mount Fuji, which is covered in snow about five months of the year, is often used as a cultural icon of Japan and is regularly featured in art and photography, as well as by visitors, hikers and mountaineers.

Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" (三霊山, Sanreizan) along with mountains Tate and Haku. It is a Special Place of Picturesque Beauty and one of Japan's Historic Places.

Considered sacred since ancient times, the summit was forbidden to women. It was not until 1872 that the Japanese government issued an edict (4 May 1872, Edict 98 of the Grand Council of State), stating, "All remaining practices of exclusion of women on shrine and temple grounds shall be immediately abolished, and mountain climbing for the purpose of worship, etc., shall be permitted." Nevertheless, Tatsu Takayama, a Japanese woman, managed to become the first woman on record to reach the summit of Mount Fuji in the autumn of 1832.

Ancient samurai used the base of the mountain as a remote training area, near the present-day city of Gotemba. The shōgun Minamoto no Yoritomo organised archery competitions with yabusame in the area during the early Kamakura era.
