About ‘Morning light over the Schlinig Valley’ by Marcel Hechler

Early in the morning, I set off from the Sesvenna Hut towards my car. It was still quiet; the sun was low in the sky and was just beginning to rise above the upper slopes.

The Schlinigtal valley opened up before me: a wide, green valley floor through which a narrow path winds its way down, accompanied by a small stream. To the left and right, the slopes rise, densely wooded on one side, interspersed with meadows and rock on the other.

Far in the distance, beyond the valley, morning mist still hangs over the Vinschgau — a light, soft veil that separates the distant mountain ranges from one another and makes the depth palpable. And right behind it rises the Ortler, at 3,905 metres the highest mountain in South Tyrol, covered this morning in a dusting of snow and warm light.

What held me there was this tranquillity. The valley still lay in cool light, whilst the heights were already glowing golden and the mist was slowly fading away. The rock in the foreground anchors the view before it stretches out into the distance.

For me, the image captures that final quiet moment at the end of a hike. Hanging on a wall, it brings a sense of space and tranquillity into a room — above the sofa, in the bedroom, or wherever you might want to take a deep breath.
