This is digital re-imagining or recreation of Veit Stoss' rosary medallion 'Moon' which the German artist had created in 1518 as part of the Angelic Salutation (German: Engelsgruß), an assemblage of limewood sculptures celebrating the Annunciation for the medieval church of St. Lorenz in Nuremberg, southern Germany. The moon is painted on the back of one of the 7 medallions that surround the sculptures. One other medallion shows a sun on the back and the remainder are adorned with golden stars.
Many, many moons ago (pun intended) I bought a postcard showing the original but slightly damaged medallion and it still hangs on a wall in my house to this day. I thought it'd be nice to have a bigger version of it. I added a star on the far right where the original is damaged, not knowing whether there was one in the original. But I think it balances the image a little, given that the moon is not centered.
