The Montelbaan tower is an Amsterdam tower from 1516 on the Oudeschans 2. The name arose because the Duke of Alva (Alba) wanted to build a castle near this tower, and wanted to give this castle the name Monte Albano.
In 1606 the tower lost its function. An ornamental crowning in Renaissance style, designed by city architect Hendrick de Keyser, was placed on it. This made the Montelbaan tower 48 metres high. In the tower came a clockwork, and some swinging bells. In 1610 the tower, which was founded on plaggen (called skins), sank crookedly. It then had to be straightened, and got a new (stone) foundation. - Sunset at the Montelbaan tower in Amsterdam
